How Google reads a web page

With the BBC News and Domino's Pizza websites on the projector, we looked at how a page is put together so Google understands what it is about: the page title, the headings, and the links that connect one page to another (on-page optimisation and internal linking).

What we covered

  • What Google checks on a page before showing it in search results (ranking signals)
  • Why links between your own pages matter (internal linking)
  • How large websites like BBC News and Domino's Pizza structure their pages

Getting a page onto Google, and measuring the visitors it brings

The second class with the same students. We built a page step by step around the words customers actually type into Google (keyword research), then looked at how to measure which efforts actually brought visitors (attribution).

What we covered

  • How Google decides which pages to show first, and how links from other websites help (PageRank and backlinks)
  • Finding the words your customers actually search for (keywords)
  • The steps to optimise one page so it can rank (on-page SEO)
  • Measuring where your visitors came from (attribution), and the tools that report it

Why your business needs its own website, not only social media

What SEO means in plain terms, which search engines people actually use (Google and Bing), and why relying only on Instagram means building on a platform you do not own.

What we covered

  • The three areas of SEO: the page itself, your reputation on other websites, and the technical setup (on-page, off-page and technical SEO)
  • Where customers search, beyond Google
  • Why social media is one part of online marketing, not all of it (digital marketing channels)

Helping Google find every page on your website

Using Ahrefs' own website as the example, we opened the file that lists every page on a website (the sitemap) and saw how submitting it to Google helps new pages get found quickly.

What we covered

  • What a sitemap is, and where to find yours
  • Submitting it to Google so new pages are found faster (indexing)
